High Tatras group trip: a 3-day itinerary by coach
Three days, one coach and the best of the High Tatras and Spiš: mountain lakes, a cable car, a cave, rafting and two UNESCO sites. A practical plan for group organisers.

The High Tatras pack an unusual amount into a small area: alpine lakes, cable cars, caves, medieval towns and one of the largest castle ruins in Central Europe, all within easy reach of Poprad. This 3-day High Tatras group trip itinerary by coach is built for school groups, clubs, corporate outings and tour operators who want to see the highlights without spending the whole day on the road. Each day has short drives and leaves room for meals, photos and the unexpected.
Before you start: how the coach fits in
A coach based in Poprad, close to all the stops below, keeps the daily kilometres low and avoids long positioning runs. A few practical points help the days run smoothly:
- the coach goes as far as the road allows: it takes you to the funicular and cable car stations, and from there you continue on foot or by lift,
- the driver needs rest: EU rules require a daily rest of 11 hours, which may be reduced to 9 hours three times between weekly rests, so a late evening programme can affect the next morning's start (see our guide to EU coach driver hours),
- waiting time is part of the price: the coach usually waits while the group visits each sight, and that time is reflected in the quote.
Day 1: Štrbské Pleso and Hrebienok
Morning: Štrbské Pleso
Start at Štrbské Pleso, the resort at the western end of the range. A walk around the glacial lake is easy for every age and fitness level and gives the classic view of the peaks. If your group arrives by air, Poprad-Tatry Airport is just 23 km away, about 25 minutes by coach (see Poprad-Tatry Airport transfers).
Afternoon: Starý Smokovec and the Hrebienok funicular
Drive along the foot of the mountains to Starý Smokovec, the heart of the resort strip. The funicular climbs to Hrebienok, where well-marked forest paths lead towards the waterfalls of the Studená dolina valley. Stronger walkers can go further, while others enjoy the views and a hot drink before riding back down.
Evening
Return to the hotel, or round off the day at AquaCity Poprad, a popular choice for groups with younger participants.
Day 2: Lomnický štít, Belianska Cave and Dunajec rafting
Morning: Tatranská Lomnica and Lomnický štít
Head east to Tatranská Lomnica, where the cable car rises towards Lomnický štít, one of the highest peaks in the range. Capacity at the top is limited and weather decides a great deal up there, so organisers should book tickets well ahead and keep a fallback plan for a cloudy day.
Midday: Belianska Cave
Continue to Belianska Cave (Belianska jaskyňa), the show cave of the High Tatras, with its dripstone halls. The guided tour involves a short uphill walk to the entrance and many steps inside, so tell participants to wear sturdy shoes and bring a warm layer.
Afternoon: Dunajec rafting in Pieniny
Drive on to the Pieniny, where traditional wooden rafts carry visitors down the Dunajec gorge between limestone cliffs. It is a calm, scenic trip rather than white-water rafting, which makes it suitable for nearly every group. Rafting runs in the warmer months, so check the season when planning.
Day 3: Kežmarok, Levoča and Spiš Castle
Morning: Kežmarok
Start the day in Kežmarok, a historic town just east of Poprad with a castle in the centre and a well-preserved old town. A short guided walk is enough to get a feel for the place.
Midday: Levoča
Levoča is a UNESCO-listed town with a large main square surrounded by burgher houses. Its church is famous for its carved Gothic altar. The square is a good place to break for lunch.
Afternoon: Spiš Castle
Finish at Spiš Castle, also on the UNESCO list, a vast ruin on a hill above the countryside. Allow enough time to walk up and explore the walls. From here the coach returns to Poprad or continues straight to the airport for departure.
