Kraków is the most common gateway for groups heading to the Slovak High Tatras. Here is how a private coach transfer works, from the arrivals hall to your hotel door.

For most groups flying in for a holiday, a conference or a ski week in the Slovak mountains, the journey from Krakow Airport to the High Tatras is the first real decision. Kraków Balice (KRK) has the widest choice of flights in the region, and from the terminal it is 161 km by road to Poprad, which a coach covers in about 2 h 50 min with no mandatory break needed. A private coach collects the whole group at once and drops everyone at the hotel.

Why a private coach transfer suits groups

Changing between public connections with a group, luggage and possibly skis rarely goes smoothly. A private transfer turns the trip into one simple step:

  • one pick-up for everyone, outside the terminal at the agreed time,
  • door to door, to your hotel in Poprad, Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica rather than to a town centre stop,
  • luggage stays with you: a large hold takes suitcases, skis, bikes and sports kit,
  • comfort on board: all our coaches have air conditioning, a WC, a coffee machine and seat belts on every seat.

For groups of up to 53 people one coach is enough. Larger groups travel in two coaches, which can also be useful when arrivals are spread across two flights.

Distance and journey time from Krakow Airport

RouteDistanceCoach time
Krakow Airport to Poprad161 kmabout 2 h 50 min
Katowice Airport to Štrbské Pleso259 kmabout 4 h

The coach times include the slower pace of a full coach compared with a car. Resorts west of Poprad, such as Štrbské Pleso, and those to the east, such as Tatranská Lomnica, add a short final stretch depending on where your hotel is. The calculator works out the exact figures for your address.

Katowice Airport (KTW, Pyrzowice) is a practical alternative when flights there suit your group better. It is further away, but at about 4 hours to Štrbské Pleso it still fits comfortably into a single driving day.

Flight delays and meeting the driver

Delays happen, and planning for them takes the stress out of arrival day.

  1. Include the flight number and scheduled landing time in your request, so the pick-up time can be set realistically.
  2. Allow time for baggage reclaim. Groups with skis or oversized items usually need longer than the landing time suggests.
  3. Keep a phone number at hand. If the flight is delayed, the group leader can call the dispatcher on +421 905 645 354.
  4. Agree how waiting is handled. Extra waiting time is charged by the hour, so a quote that states the included waiting time avoids surprises.

Luggage, skis and border formalities

Each piece of luggage can weigh up to 30 kg. Skis and snowboards in bags travel in the hold alongside suitcases; just tell us how many pairs to expect so the right coach is assigned. Bikes and other bulky kit are fine too if they are mentioned in advance.

Poland and Slovakia are both in the Schengen area, so there are no routine border checks on the way. Every passenger should still carry an ID card or passport, because checks can happen at any time.

The return journey and combined trips

Most groups book the return transfer with the outbound one, which makes planning easier and keeps the same coach and driver. If you have a free day, Zakopane, on the Polish side of the Tatras, is close by: a trip from Poprad to Zakopane is about 68 km. For a full programme, see our 3-day High Tatras group itinerary.
