Vienna Airport (VIE, Schwechat) is one of the best-connected airports in Central Europe, which makes it a natural choice for groups flying in from further afield. The transfer from Vienna Airport to the High Tatras is longer than from Kraków, though: 390 km to Poprad, which takes a coach about 5 h 35 min including one mandatory break. Planned properly, it is a comfortable half-day journey across the whole length of Slovakia.
Why fly into Vienna for the Tatras
Groups choose Vienna for good reasons. There is a wide range of direct long-haul and European flights, which matters when participants come from several countries or continents. Flights can also be easier to align for a large group. The trade-off is the road distance, and a private coach is the simplest way to cover it without anyone having to manage connections with luggage.
The route and journey time
| Route | Distance | Coach time | Mandatory breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna Airport to Poprad | 390 km | about 5 h 35 min | 1 |
The airport lies on the eastern side of Vienna, close to the Slovak border, so the coach is in Slovakia within a short time of leaving the terminal. From there the journey runs along the motorway past Bratislava and up the Váh valley before climbing towards the Tatras. Austria and Slovakia are both in the Schengen area, so there are no routine border checks, although every passenger must carry an ID card or passport.
The coach time includes the slower pace of a full coach and one 45-minute break, which EU rules require after 4.5 hours of driving. The break is a good moment for passengers to stretch their legs and buy a drink. If your hotel is in Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica rather than Poprad, the calculator adds the final stretch for your exact address.
One driver or two?
With about 5 h 35 min on the road, a Vienna to Poprad transfer stays well within the 9-hour daily driving limit, so one driver is enough. That changes if you add significant stops, for example a sightseeing visit to Bratislava on the way, or if the coach must also drive a long positioning run on the same day. Our guide to EU coach driver hours explains how these limits affect planning.
Planning arrival day
A transfer of more than five hours needs a little more thought than a short hop.
- Choose a sensible landing time. A morning or early afternoon arrival lets the group reach the mountains while there is still time to check in calmly.
- Include the flight number in your request, so the pick-up time accounts for baggage reclaim and passport control for passengers from outside Schengen.
- Agree waiting time. If a flight is late, extra waiting is charged by the hour. A quote that states the included waiting time avoids any surprises.
- Keep the dispatcher's number (+421 905 645 354) with the group leader for any last-minute changes.
Comfort for a longer journey
On a five-hour trip the coach matters. All our coaches have air conditioning, a WC, a coffee machine, TV monitors and reclining seats with a seat belt on every seat. The luggage hold takes suitcases of up to 30 kg each as well as skis, bikes and sports equipment. See the details of each vehicle in our fleet.
When Vienna makes sense, and when another airport does
If your group can choose freely, compare the options. Kraków is closer to Poprad (see Krakow Airport to the High Tatras), and Budapest is a similar distance to Vienna (see Budapest Airport to the High Tatras). For small charter arrivals, Poprad-Tatry Airport is right at the foot of the mountains. Often the deciding factor is simply where your participants can fly from.
