Budapest Airport to the High Tatras: a guide for groups
Budapest is a strong alternative gateway to the Slovak mountains. Here is how a group transfer from Budapest Airport to Poprad works and what to plan for.

Budapest Airport (BUD) offers a broad choice of flights, and for many groups it is the most convenient way into the region. The transfer from Budapest Airport to the High Tatras covers 382 km to Poprad, which takes a coach about 5 h 20 min including one mandatory break. With a private coach, the group travels together from the terminal to the hotel without changes or luggage handling along the way.
Why groups land in Budapest
Budapest is often chosen when flights from the group's home country are better or more frequent there than to the smaller airports nearer the mountains. It also suits trips that combine a few days in the Hungarian capital with time in the Tatras. Whatever the reason, the road journey north is straightforward and fits easily into one day with a single driver.
Distance, time and the mandatory break
| Route | Distance | Coach time | Mandatory breaks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budapest Airport to Poprad | 382 km | about 5 h 20 min | 1 |
The coach time reflects the pace of a full coach rather than a car, and includes one 45-minute break. EU rules require this break after 4.5 hours of driving, and the driver may split it into 15 and 30 minutes. In practice the stop gives passengers time for a coffee and a walk around before the final part of the trip.
Hungary and Slovakia are both in the Schengen area, so there are no routine border checks. Every passenger still needs an ID card or passport, because spot checks are possible.
If your accommodation is in Štrbské Pleso, Starý Smokovec or Tatranská Lomnica rather than Poprad itself, the calculator adds the short final stretch to your exact address.
Planning the day of arrival
A five-hour transfer is easy to manage when a few details are agreed in advance.
- Send the flight number and landing time with your request. The pick-up time then allows for baggage reclaim and, for passengers from outside Schengen, passport control.
- Think about arrival time. Landing in the morning or around midday means the group reaches the mountains in good time for check-in and dinner.
- Agree on waiting time. If a flight is delayed, additional waiting is charged by the hour, so check how much is included in the quote.
- Give the group leader the dispatcher's number, +421 905 645 354, for any changes on the day.
One driver is usually enough
At about 5 h 20 min, the journey stays well within the 9-hour daily driving limit for one driver. A second driver only becomes necessary if the day gets much longer, for example with a sightseeing stop on the way, or if the coach has to cover a long distance before collecting you. Our article on EU coach driver hours explains the rules behind this in plain terms.
Luggage and comfort on board
Each suitcase can weigh up to 30 kg, and the large luggage hold takes skis, bikes and sports kit as well. Just let us know about anything bulky so the right coach is assigned. All our coaches have air conditioning, a WC, a coffee machine and seat belts on every seat. For groups of more than 53 people we send two coaches. You can compare the vehicles in our fleet.
Budapest, Vienna or Kraków?
If your group has a choice of airports, compare the road distance with the flight options. Budapest and Vienna are similar distances from Poprad (see Vienna Airport to the High Tatras), while Kraków is considerably closer (see Krakow Airport to the High Tatras). Košice Airport is closer still, with the Košice Airport to Starý Smokovec transfer at 134 km, but it has fewer flights.
