Bratislava, the Slovak capital, sits at the opposite end of the country from the High Tatras. The coach covers about 331 km in about 4 h 05 min, which is short enough that no mandatory break is needed, although a comfort stop is easy to add. With no border to cross, it is one of the simplest long transfers we drive.

From the mountains to the Danube

The route leaves the Poprad basin westwards, passes through the Liptov region with the Low Tatras on one side, and then follows the Váh valley past Žilina and Trenčín down to the lowlands around Bratislava. Most of it is motorway, and Slovak motorway tolls are paid by the coach. It is a pleasant way to see a large part of the country in half a day, with castles on the hills above the valley. No passport check takes place, but passengers should carry an ID card or passport as on any trip.

Schools travel to Bratislava for the parliament, the castle and the old town. Companies use the coach for meetings, trade fairs and team events in the capital, and visitors who finish a Tatra holiday often want to continue to Bratislava or on towards Vienna. Since the driving time is about 4 hours each way, a same-day return trip is possible within the 9-hour daily driving limit, but it makes for a long day; many groups prefer an overnight stay.
