Makarska is one of the favourite summer destinations for groups from Slovakia on the Croatian Adriatic. That is well over the 9 hours a single driver may drive in a day, so two drivers travel on board and take turns.
Through Hungary and down the Croatian coast
The coach leaves Poprad southwards, crosses Hungary and enters Croatia, then follows the motorway down towards Split before reaching the coast at Makarska. Slovakia, Hungary and Croatia are all in Schengen, so there are no routine border controls, but every passenger must carry an ID card or passport. Tolls in all three countries are paid by the coach. The trip includes three 45-minute breaks, roughly one every four and a half hours of driving, which is also when the drivers swap.
Overnight driving and luggage for a week
Most groups travel overnight: they leave Poprad in the evening and reach the Adriatic the next day, which saves a hotel night and a day of holiday. The coach has a WC and a coffee machine, which makes the night easier, and with two drivers on board the journey continues without a long rest stop. Pack for the night in a small bag kept at your seat and put the rest in the luggage hold, where each piece may weigh up to 30 kg. Bikes and sports equipment fit as well.
