Coach hire cost in Slovakia: what the price depends on

A coach quote is not a number from a price list. It is built from kilometres, driver time, tolls and a few smaller items. Here is how each one works.

Ask any operator how much coach hire costs and you will hear the same answer: it depends on the trip. That is not evasion. The cost of private coach hire with a driver in Slovakia is made up of several components, and each one is driven by a different part of your plans: the date and season, the route, the size of your group and the services you need. Once you understand them, you know what to put in your request and can compare quotes on equal terms.

What makes up the cost of coach hire in Slovakia

Kilometres, including positioning

Distance is the foundation of every quote, and every kilometre counts: from the depot to your pick-up point, the whole journey with your group, and the drive back to the depot. This empty running is called positioning. On a one-way transfer you therefore usually pay for the coach to return empty, unless the operator has another job waiting near your destination.

This is why it pays to book an operator based close to where the trip starts. For journeys beginning in Poprad, the High Tatras or the Spiš region, a local coach avoids an expensive positioning run from another part of the country.

Driver time and the number of days

Coach drivers work under strict EU limits on driving time and breaks (explained in our guide to EU coach driver hours). When a day's driving goes beyond 9 hours, a second driver must come along, or the trip is split over two days with an overnight stop. Either way, it shows in the price:

  • a second driver means paying for a second person for the whole journey,
  • a multi-day tour adds a daily rate for the driver plus their accommodation,
  • waiting time, for example during a wedding, a conference dinner or a long excursion, is charged by the hour.

Tolls, parking and fees

Coaches pay electronic tolls in Slovakia, Poland, Czechia, Austria, Hungary and most of Europe. The amount depends on the route and the countries crossed, so operators either include tolls in the price or list them separately. City trips can add coach parking or entry fees, particularly in historic centres.

Coach size

A larger coach uses more fuel, but the price per person is lowest when the coach is full. If 45 people are travelling, one 49-seat coach is better value than two smaller vehicles. Our fleet has coaches for 49, 52 and 53 passengers, and for groups of more than 53 we send two coaches.

Dates and season

Demand peaks in late spring with school trips, in winter with ski courses and in summer with seaside holidays. Groups that book early can be sure of a free coach and usually get a better price than those booking in the final weeks.

The minimum price

Even a short transfer is priced individually, but there is a floor: the minimum price of a trip is €250 + VAT.

What a fair quote should include

When you compare quotes, check that they cover the same items. A cheaper offer that leaves out tolls or the driver's overnight costs can end up more expensive.

ItemWhat to ask
KilometresAre positioning and the return to the depot included?
DriverHow many drivers, and is their accommodation included?
TollsIncluded, or charged separately?
WaitingHow many hours of waiting are included?
LuggageIs there room for skis, bikes or extra cases?
CancellationWhat are the cancellation terms?

Our cancellation terms are simple: cancelling 14 or more days before departure is free of charge; 13 to 8 days before departure, we charge 30 % of the price; 7 to 2 days before, 50 %; and the day before departure or on the day itself, 100 %. There is no minimum fee. The invoice is payable within 14 days.

How to get a binding quote

Send us your route, the date, the size of your group and any wishes, and we will prepare the price individually and send you a binding quote with a specific coach within 24 hours. Before you ask, you can enter your route into the calculator: it shows the route, the distance and the travel time including mandatory breaks, which helps you plan the day.

How to save on coach hire

  1. Fill the coach. The price of the coach is the same for 30 or 49 people, so the cost per head falls with every extra passenger.
  2. Book early. In peak season coaches are reserved weeks in advance.
  3. Combine journeys. If you need a transfer out and back within a few hours, the coach can wait for you and you avoid paying for two positioning runs.
  4. Choose an operator near the start. For trips from the Tatras and Poprad there is no positioning charge from a distant city.
  5. Be flexible with timing. A departure that keeps the day under 9 hours of driving can avoid the need for a second driver.

Questions people ask

Didn't find your answer?

We take calls every day.

  • Yes, a quote counts every kilometre from the depot and back again. On a one-way transfer that includes the empty return, unless the operator has another job near your destination.

  • When the daily driving time would exceed 9 hours, or when the driver could not take the required daily rest. The alternative is to split the journey over two days with an overnight stop.

  • That varies between operators. Our quotes always state whether tolls are included, so you can compare offers fairly.

  • The price always depends on the order: the date and season, the route, the size of your group and the services you need. We prepare it individually for each trip. The minimum price of a trip is €250 + VAT.

  • We send a binding quote with a specific coach within 24 hours of your request. The calculator shows the route, the distance and the travel time straight away.
